FAQ

  • What is octane?

The name comes from the presence of eight carbon atoms per hydrocarbon molecule. The octane number (RON = Researched Octane Number) is the measurement of the petrol's ability to resist spontaneous combustion. The spontaneous combustion can cause engine knocks, known as ‘pinging’ sounds which can cause engine damage. Modern petrol engines are adjusted to a specific octane number. When petrol of a lower-than-normal octane number is used, this causes knocks. Engines equipped with special knock sensors can handle lower octane fuel, slowing down combustion time. At the same time, fuel consumption is increased and engine performance is reduced, worsening driving feeling. By using petrol with a higher octane number than the minimum, fuel consumption is reduced and engine performance is improved.
  • Is all unleaded 95 octane petrol the same?

95-octane petrol should meet the requirements of European standard EN 228. That said, each petrol acquires its own performance characteristics during use, depending on the technology of specific additives it contains. At EKO, the choice of diversification technology of unleaded 95 RON petrol, focused on ensuring the lowest possible fuel consumption depending on the driving style, and the cleanliness and longevity of the engine without this cost burdening the end consumer. The combination of all these features led to the design of unleaded petrol EKOnomy 95.
  • What are the differences between 95 and 98 octane petrol?

The difference in octane number is perceived as combustion quality and performance that is required by our car’s engine. If petrol with lower octanes than those recommended by the manufacturer are used, knocks may be heard in your car's engine. This is the knocking phenomenon (i.e. pinging sound), the consequences of which were detailed above.
  • Does the use of 98-octane petrol increase consumption?

The correct answer to this question depends on the use in terms of driving style, and the car type. In other words, the new generation aspirated engines with high compression ratio, have better combustion, and therefore have a reduced consumption with much better performance, especially on roads outside the city. The EKO Racing 98 petrol keeps your engine clean by reducing the formation of deposits on valves by up to 100%, ensuring excellent cleaning results in Direct Injection Spark Ignition petrol engines. Moreover, with advanced additive technology which it contains in combination with the increased octane number, the EKO Racing 98 petrol significantly reduces friction while achieving high performance and economy in fuel consumption.
  • Which engines benefit more from using 98 octane petrol?

All direct injection engines, whether turbocharged or natural aspiration, benefit from the use of high octane petrol because they present a higher geometric compression ratio compared to an indirect injection engine.
  • Does the Hellenic Petroleum refinery deliver the same fuel to all the petrol companies?

Every type of fuel that is required for the Greek market is produced by HELLENIC PETROLEUM in accordance with state requirement which are harmonized with European standards.

    Produced and marketed:
    • Unleaded 95 Octane petrol (according to European standard EN-228, zero sulfur).
    • Unleaded 96 Octane petrol with lead replacement (LRP) for the old technology vehicles without a catalyst.
    • Unleaded 100 Octane petrol with zero sulfur.
    • Diesel (according to European standard EN-590).
    • Auto gas (according to European standard EN-589).
EKO offers consumers 95 and 100 octane petrols and Diesel containing additional high-technology additives to improve fuel efficiency in terms of purity and longevity of the engine and reduced fuel consumption.

  • How can I be sure that the 98 octane petrol is really 98 octane?

Currently, EKO is the only company in the Greek market that has the Quality & Quantity Warranty Program. EKO has spot test kits, so when refueling the consumer can personally check if the petrol is actually 98 octane or 95 octane which is the usual impurity. The specially trained staff can help the consumer to perform the on-site test.
  • What is cetane?

Cetane number is an indicator of the combustion speed of diesel fuel. The higher the cetane number the more easily the fuel will combust.

Cetane number also affects the cold start of an engine, emissions and noise in the combustion chamber. The high cetane number ensures control of the ignition time in exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) diesel engines.
  • How important is the purity of the fuel in Diesel;

The purity of the diesel fuel simultaneously means instant savings, better engine performance and reduced deposits which in the long run result in significant wear and maintenance costs, respectively. In diesel engines, especially modern direct injection common rail engines, the injection system, the pumps and the entire fuel circuit are extremely sensitive to the presence of particles and water.

Another important factor that can affect engine performance and cause harmful deposits in the injection system (injectors), is the formation of deposits from combustion and crystallization of the fuel (paraffin formation) that may occur during the winter months because of low temperatures.
Biodiesel, whose content requirement in diesel according to the European standard EN 590, has significantly complicated the work of fuel technicians, is another significant factor in the formation of deposits in the fuel injection systems.
For all the above, EKO offers a comprehensive solution with its products, especially with the new Diesel AVIO. The special latest technology additives and the special aircraft fuel filter, which is located immediately before the pumps with a filtration efficiency of almost 98%, manages to remove particles and water that constitute a factor for the growth of a nutritious substrate for fungi, bacteria and rust in the engine. Thus, the new Diesel AVIO ensures:

    • Greater acceleration, noise reduction and less vibration, thanks to increased cetane number
    • Zero engine power loss throughout its operation and the full speed range
    • Exceptional engine cleaning results, thus a reduction in fuel consumption
    • Complete restoration of the engine’s smooth operation with 2 fill ups. With 5 fill ups, complete disappearance of internal deposits on the injectors
    • Effective antifoam, anticorrosion and antioxidant protection thanks to special technologically advanced admixtures
