With the aim of reducing road collisions and meaningfully enhancing driver education, EKO is implementing a road safety programme by investing in training initiatives that have a real impact on driver behaviour.
The initiatives were presented at a press conference held on April 16, 2026, at the Traffic Education Park of the Cyprus Police, in the presence of the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou, the Chief of Police Mr. Themistos Arnaoutis, the Director of the Traffic Department Mr. Charis Evripidou, as well as representatives of the Cyprus Motorcycle Federation (CYMF).
Road safety has long been a key pillar of EKO’s Corporate Social Responsibility Programme, through a wide range of initiatives. Since 2016, efforts have focused on motorcyclists, who are the most vulnerable group in road collisions, leading to the creation of the “EKO Safe Rider” programme.
The “Safe Rider” seminars are implemented in collaboration with City’s A.R.T. and the Nicosia Motorcyclists Club, under the auspices of the Cyprus Motorcycle Federation, and are based on internationally recognised training methodologies.
To date, more than 2,500 motorcyclists have been trained through the programme, which has significantly contributed to reducing serious road collisions.
This year, the road safety programme for motorcyclists is expanding to include specialised off-road training, further enhancing participants’ skills and safety.
For 2026, the programme is being further strengthened, including a comprehensive action plan addressing different groups of road users.
Specifically, it includes training initiatives for new car drivers, who are among the most vulnerable road users, particularly in the first months after obtaining their driving licence. The programme is based on experiential learning and is conducted in a controlled environment, in collaboration with the Traffic Department of the Cyprus Police.
Through specially designed exercises, participants are asked to manage realistic driving scenarios, gaining a practical understanding of how perception, reaction time and vehicle control are affected. The exercises include, among others, distraction tests such as mobile phone use while driving, comparative speed and reaction scenarios, as well as simulations of the effects of fatigue, alcohol consumption, or drug use.
The training experience is completed with guided discussion and reflection, aiming not only at understanding risks, but primarily at shaping responsible driving behaviour and personal accountability.
Young car drivers currently serving their military service will participate in the experiential training programme.
This year’s initiatives will conclude with a special event for children at the Traffic Education Park, highlighting the importance of education and prevention from an early age.
On his part, the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou, noted: “Road safety is not simply a matter of following rules or complying with legislation, but primarily an issue of culture and mindset. I would like to once again express my gratitude to EKO—a long-standing supporter of the National Guard—and especially to its CEO, Mr. Giorgos Grigoras, who is present here, for this commendable initiative, and to highlight their gesture as an example of the meaningful contribution the private sector can offer…”.
In his address, the Chief of the Cyprus Police, Mr. Themistos Arnaoutis, emphasised: “Education is not limited to the transmission of knowledge. It is, above all, a process of cultivating skills, values and attitudes that shape responsible and mature citizens and conscious road users. In this context, we support initiatives such as the EKO Safe Rider programme, which was established eleven years ago and plays a decisive role in enhancing road safety through education…”.
“At EKO, we consistently invest in road safety through initiatives that lead to meaningful behavioural change. The EKO road safety programme is continuously evolving, aiming to contribute to a more responsible driving culture for all,”, said EKO CEO Mr. Giorgos Grigoras during his presentation.
With the message “Drive right, choose life”, the new campaign TV spots were presented, placing particular emphasis on preventing road accidents and fostering responsible driving behaviour. At the same time, they mark the launch of a major communication campaign aimed at raising public awareness.
