EKO and the Ministry of Agriculture join forces to protect water resources

EKO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment and the Water Development Department, has announced an initiative to address water scarcity through the free distribution of 150,000 water-saving nozzles to households across Cyprus, strengthening the national effort for the rational management of water resources.

The initiative was presented during a press conference held on Monday, 11 May, in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, representatives of the Water Development Department, and representatives of the district local government organisations.

Water scarcity is one of the most significant challenges currently facing Cyprus. Limited rainfall and increasing water demand are intensifying pressure on the country’s water reserves. Ensuring adequate water resources and their sustainable management is emerging as a critical priority that requires coordinated action and the contribution of both relevant authorities and society as a whole.

Within this context, EKO is proceeding with the distribution of water-saving nozzle sets for domestic use. These devices are easily installed on taps and showers and contribute directly to reducing water consumption without affecting everyday use. Their application can lead to significant household water savings while also supporting the protection of water resources.

Specifically, with fuel purchases of €25 or more at EKO petrol stations, users of the EKO Smile application will be eligible to receive a free water-saving set, which includes:
  • 4 tap nozzles
  • 2 shower nozzles

The nozzles are simple water-saving devices that are easily fitted onto existing taps and showers without the need for technical assistance. By mixing air with water, they maintain a sense of pressure while significantly reducing water flow. In particular, they can limit flow to up to 5 litres per minute for taps and up to 8 litres per minute for showers, contributing to overall water savings of up to 30% in daily use.

Each set is accompanied by informational material from EKO, as well as a leaflet from the Water Development Department and the Ministry, including installation instructions. Through a QR code, citizens can access the Government’s official website for additional information and practical water-saving tips.

A total of 150,000 nozzles will be distributed through the EKO network of petrol stations, with the aim of equipping approximately 25,000 households across Cyprus.

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Ms. Panayiotou, described EKO’s initiative to distribute water-saving nozzles free of charge to citizens as particularly important, emphasizing that it is an action with a substantial environmental and social impact.

At the same time, she noted that through such collaborations, ‘it is demonstrated in practice that addressing water scarcity is a matter of collective responsibility and joint action’.

The Chief Executive Officer of EKO, Mr Grigoras, highlighted: ‘At EKO, we believe that tackling water scarcity does not begin with grand statements, but with practical solutions that can be immediately applied in people’s daily lives. The initiative we are presenting today has exactly this goal: to provide citizens with a practical tool through which they can directly contribute to reducing water consumption’.

The First Officer of the Water Development Department, Mr. Georgios Kazantzis, stated: ‘EKO’s decision to distribute 150,000 water-saving nozzles free of charge to households across Cyprus is a practical and immediately applicable solution that is fully aligned with the objectives and priorities of our Department. By installing and using these nozzles, water consumption can be reduced by up to 30%, without the user noticing any significant difference’.
